Long-established and very much a part of the scenery on the harbour side at Torquay, this converted Regency house has barely changed since it opened.
Family-run, and friendly, the dark wooden floors, seafaring knick-knacks and colourful oilcloths on the tables are as traditional as the wide-ranging menus.
Seafood broth or hot and cold shellfish platters are followed by lobster and crab freshly boiled or grilled with garlic and brandy butter, or a fillet of plaice filed with peeled prawns and baked with a thermidor sauce. Scallops simmered with mushrooms, vermouth and lemon, and monkfish baked with black pepper and sea salt expand the repertoire. Desserts include home-made apple crumble, a selection of local cheeses and the well priced wine list sets sail at £12.
